Hi neighbors -
We took a drive up the canyon this morning to investigate freeing the
moose calf. We couldn't find the baby or mom, so hopefully all is well.
I probably don't need to mention it, but an angry moose can be more
dangerous than a bear, and should not be approached.
Montana FWP has a flyer on wildlife-friendly fencing:
http://fwp.mt.gov/fwpDoc.html?id=34461
Fair warning: there are some graphic photos of fencing failures; skip
straight to page 8 for advice on how to improve. Our property had smooth
wire fencing when we moved in, which is only a little better than barbed
wire - it's still an entrapment hazard. We replaced the top strand with
electric rope, which is more visible and flexible, and lowered several
sections for easier crossing. The moose still damage it once a year, but
with fewer consequences and easier repairs.
